Yamanobe-no-Michi — A Path Through Time

Yamanobe-no-Michi, the “Path Along the Mountains,” is one of Japan’s ancient roads, passing through a landscape deeply connected to Japanese history, religion, and poetry.

I first walked this path as a college student. Many years later, I returned with my camera, wondering what had changed and what had remained.

Walking again through rice fields, past old stone walls, moss-covered stones, traditional houses, and forests, I found myself moving between memory and the present. The landscape was familiar, yet I saw it differently.

Many poets traveled this same path and expressed their experiences through poetry. Inspired by their connection to the landscape, I photograph the quiet traces of time—the ancient paths, stones, trees, fields, and changing light.

For me, photography becomes a form of visual poetry. Returning to Yamanobe-no-Michi is not only a journey through an ancient landscape, but also a journey through memory, time, and the changing way we see.
